Tips For Keeping Your Hardwood Floor Clean

Here are some simple tips on how to keep your hardwood floors clean and looking new!

Hardwood floors can give any room in your home a simple, but classic look. No matter what design you choose, these floors are beautiful and have a lovely shine if you care for them correctly. Though you can’t use water on hardwood flooring, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t clean them. Here are some tips that will help keep your hardwood floor clean and looking fresh.

Vacuum Weekly

The fine pieces within dust can slowly wear through your floor’s finish. It is not something that will happen quickly, but your floor will eventually start to look worn down. Vacuuming once a week is an easy way to keep the dust from settling into the crevices of your floor.  Pretty much all vacuums have a setting that allows you to use them on floors. If you prefer not to make a lot of noise with a vacuum, a dust mop will work just fine as well.

Avoid Any Moisture

Water can not only ruin the finish of your hardwood floor, but it can also penetrate the wood, leaving a stain. You want to avoid this by closing all the windows whenever you expect rain. A few rain drops coming in may not seem like that big of an issue, but water buildup can really damage the look of your floor. You also want to make sure that you clean up any spills immediately to avoid the water soaking into the wood. If you have any plants on your floor, put something underneath them just in case some water spills while you’re watering them.

Furniture Pads

The legs of your furniture can eventually scratch your hardwood floors. Even if you don’t move your furniture around much, it is still a good idea to invest in furniture pads. This gives it something to sit on other than the floor to avoid any scratches. Furniture pads also makes moving your furniture a lot easier.

Area Rugs

There is some wear and tear that can’t be avoided when it comes to flooring. This is simply the result of people walking across the same areas several times a day. It will take a while for the effects of this to show up, but it will eventually wear down your wood floor’s finish. A good way to help avoid this is to invest in an area rug for the parts of your home that have the most traffic. This provides a layer of protection for your hardwood floor which can keep it looking fresh for a longer period of time.
