Hardwood floors are a constant classic. Always on trend, they can make any home look more dignified and elegant. However, they can also be tricky to clean. While often, a quick sweep is enough to get the dirt up, occasionally your floors will need a deeper clean and some TLC to maintain their stunning color. To ensure that you’re cleaning safely and effectively we have three tips to help keep you on top of your to-do list.
Always Use Wood Safe Cleaners
One of the biggest mistakes that people make while cleaning their wood floors is to use cleaning agents that are too harsh for their wood. Depending on the finish of your flooring you may be able to use a more intensive cleaning agent, but in general, these types of cleaners are unnecessary as well as damaging. Stick to natural cleaners that specify that they are wood safe to ensure that you’re getting the best care and clean possible. For an easy, natural cleaning solution, ½ a cup of white vinegar can be added to a gallon of water.
Don’t Soak Your Wood
When you are deep cleaning hardwood, it can be easy to take the same approach that you would with tile. Taking care not to over-saturate your mop is essential. Unlike with other flooring types, you only want a damp mop. This prevents any water damage or staining due to water. This is particularly important if your wood flooring has an oil-based finish as opposed to a hard seal.
Clean With The Grain
Another common wood floor cleaning mistake is to not clean with the grain of the wood. Because of the unique nature of wood, dirt and grime can become trapped in the grain. When you clean against the grain not only do you risk greater wear to your flooring over time, but you also won’t get up as much of the dirt.
