With humidity comes moisture, which can lead to possible damages. If humidity hits above 55%, you might be opening up a chance for moisture to seep into the wood.

With the summer, there’s finally a chance to finally to enjoy the sun. The summertime can provide us with a plethora of opportunities, whether it be family gatherings, pool parties, or BBQs. Though with summer also comes humidity. This can have an adverse effect on your hardwood floors. With humidity comes moisture, which can lead to possible damages. If humidity hits above 55%, you might be opening up a chance for moisture to seep into the wood. Too much moisture in your home, and the floor boards might begin to swell. This swelling can create pressure between the boards, which can cause the boards to warp or cup.

The Effects of Humidity

Hardwood floors are porous. It might even be useful to think of them like sponges, being absorbent. If the humidity in your room is too high, meaning that there is too much moisture in the air, hardwood floors will respond by soaking up the moisture in the air. This can cause the wooden boards to swell. Swollen hardwoods are problematic as they become too large for their space, ending up causing pressure and rubbing against each other, which is one of the main causes of squeaky floor boards. Too much humidity is bad for both solid and engineered hardwoods, although engineered hardwoods tend to stand up to high humidity levels better than solid planks.

Protecting your Hardwood Floors

With a few simple steps, you can help protect your hardwood floors with a regular cleaning schedule.

  • Clean your hardwood with a cloth lightly dampened by a trustworthy cleaning product.
  • Do not clean your floors with water or water-based products on a daily basis. Only clean when necessary and clean only the soiled areas.
  • Never use a damp mop on a hardwood floor, as the water may deteriorate the wood and finish.
  • Don’t let a water spill dry on the floor, this can cause more damage to your flooring. Instead, try to clean up the spill immediately.
