How You Should Really Clean Tile Grout

If your tile grouting is a dingy shade that detracts from your beautiful shower tiles, it’s time to give it a good cleaning.

The time for spring cleaning has come and gone, and now it’s just time for…cleaning that you put off since last summer! If your tile grouting is a dingy shade that detracts from your beautiful shower tiles, it’s time to give it a good cleaning. Here are some of our favorite ways to clean tile grouting and restore it to a nicer shade.

Make a Paste

Baking soda and water are two of the most all-purpose substances in the home. Using 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water, make a thick paste. This paste can be used on any color of grout. Keep in mind that vinegar can be harmful to natural stones like marble, limestone, or granite. Once the paste is mixed, apply it in a thick layer to the grouting. If you are concerned about your hands being irritated from the mixture, wear rubber gloves.

Spray Away

Combine white vinegar and water in a 1 to 1 ratio in a spray bottle. Spray the baking soda paste with the vinegar solution. Right away, the mixture will start to bubble and react as the two substances make contact. The bubbling will typically last for a couple minutes, depending on how much baking soda and vinegar are present. Once the bubbling reaction concludes, the chemical part of the cleaning process is complete.

Scrub it Down

Using a nylon-bristled scrub brush or an old toothbrush, scrub neatly along each tile grouting line. Pay special attention to any edges or corners so that the entire surface is properly cleaned. Once the process is done, use clean plain water to mop the floor and rinse the grouting. Change the water as much as you need to so that you don’t spread the baking soda mixture or vinegar around the floor. Complete the process again if your tile grouting was very stained and needs more help.
