Granite is a popular and efficient choice for kitchen countertops, and has been for decades. The material is always trendy and never goes out of style, meaning it’s perfect for your kitchen renovation project. However, in order to keep your investment looking beautiful for years to come, it’s important to know exactly how to care for this surface. Countertops see a lot of activity on a daily basis, so jot down a few of these tips, and make sure you’re properly caring for your granite countertops.
You can practice some great habits every day to make sure you’re properly caring for your granite. For instance, ensure you’re blotting up spills as soon as they happen, as it’s possible for granite to stain from liquids such as coffee or wine. It’s also a good idea to use specific-to-granite cleaner when you’re wiping down the surface. Dish soap will do on occasion, but not repeatedly, as it can dull the shine.
Make sure you’re never placing hot pots and pans directly on the surface of the granite–use hot pads, or silicone sheets. There’s always a slight chance that the extreme heat will cause natural stone to fracture. Granite can also scratch relatively easily. Ensure that the surface is free of grit and dust at all times, which will scratch the granite. Also, use cutting boards rather than using knives directly on the surface; this can easily cause scratches.
There’s a long list of cleaners you should never use on granite–that’s why we recommend not using dish soap to clean the surface. However, the following substances are extremely detrimental for granite countertops. Bleach, vinegar, ammonia, bleach, and glass cleaners all contain chemicals that will stain the granite. It’s also not recommended that you use a lemon or orange to wipe down the surface, which is a commonly spread DIY “hack.” Unfortunately, this can lessen the lifespan of your countertops.
